The Pilot Duffel: A Modern Take on a Historic Travel Icon

The Pilot Duffel: A Modern Take on a Historic Travel Icon

Historically, duffel bags get their name from the town of Duffel in Belgium, where, in the 17th century, a thick and durable woolen fabric began to be used to craft a new type of large bag, initially intended for military use. On some labels, you’ll find it spelled “duffle” and on others “duffel”—both are correct.

When the duffel bag eventually transitioned from the military world to civilian life, its design evolved significantly. The original bag had a simple cylindrical shape, but modern variations now come in different forms, sizes, and materials. Today, you can find duffel bags made from leather, like ours, designed to suit different needs and preferences.

Our duffel bag is made from full grain, vegetable tanned sheepskin leather, making it ideal for air travel thanks to its flexible structure—the soft sides allow it to compress easily, making it an excellent choice for a travel carry-on.

Details like the handles and adjustable shoulder strap ensure comfortable carrying, even with heavier loads. These are crafted from full-grain, vegetable-tanned cowhide leather, while the interior is soft, spacious, and lined in fabric. Duffel bags are highly versatile and can be used in a variety of situations. They’re primarily used as practical gym bags, travel bags, or for camping, but are also loved by students for their convenience during short trips, moves and much more. Their size and structure make them especially handy for carrying sports gear or packing for longer travels.
